Analyse, refurbish and renovate sailing club Gothia.
Bocksfeldstraße 21, 13595 Berlin, Germany
Sailing has always been more than just a practical activity; it’s a pursuit steeped in a unique kind of charm and romanticism. This beautiful dream, however, comes with a stark reminder: boats must be built to last, designed with an understanding of nature’s relentless power. Every detail must be practical and durable, last the wind, water, forces of nature and be repairable.
We approached this project with the same meticulous attitude one would employ in designing and constructing a boat or ship. The essential requirement was to squeeze the boat-hall/workshop space on the plot where the club members can repair and maintain the boats. The structure is made out of timber and glulam which emphasises the maritime aesthetic.
We also connected workshop with the main building by adding new staircase in the restaurant and new roof terrace. The terrace load bearing structure integrates well with the structure of the boat-hall and doesn’t completely shut down the functioning of the restaurant - the heart of the club.
As an additional benefit, new boat-like cabins were added to the rooftop. It helped to free up space in the main building for additional storage and a more comfortable lounge room. Cabins imitated boats which helps to add more rooms and reduce the loads on the walls of the main building. Also cabins can be used as an additional source of income for the club.
All parts of the design can be build in 3 fazes which are completely independent from each other.
